13900261 - The stars of the Big Dipper over the iconic peak of Pyramid Mountain from Pyramid Island, a popular location in Jasper National Park, Alberta, for nightscape and aurora photography. This was on a very clear night in mid-October, 2022, with many aspen stands still in full autumn colour. The images for this scene were shot at moonrise, with the waning gibbous Moon off frame at right lighting the sky blue and landscape with warm alpenglow moonlight. As bonus, a short bright meteor and its orange "smoke" trail appeared on the sky exposures. I shot this during the first weekend of the 2022 Jasper D
13898481 - A Perseid meteor streaks down the Milky Way over the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party in the Cypress Hills of southwest Saskatchewan, at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, a Dark Sky Preserve. The Milky Way shines to the south. About 350 stargazers attend the SSSP every year.

13898560 - The Geminid meteor shower of 2022, showing the radiant point in Gemini at left, above Castor and Pollux. Orion is at lower right. Mars in Taurus is at top, to the left of Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster. The M44 Beehive star cluster is in the lower left corner. Small star clusters in Gemini (M35) and Auriga (M36, M37, M38) are at top.
13898369 - A single frame from a 300-frame time lapse movie, this one showing a bright meteor that showed up only on that one frame, a bit of luck as each exposure was only 4 seconds at 4 second intervals. Taken with the Canon 5D MkII and 16-35mm lens at f/2.8 and ISO 1600 to keep exposures short to minimize blurring of the windmill blades (to no avail), despite the bright moonlight from a Full Moon.
13898245 - This is Comet Wirtanen 46P in Taurus on December 14/15, 2018 accompanied by a meteor, caught by chance of course. The meteor has left a yellowish “smoke” cloud.
14030818 - Echinacea 'Meteor Pink'
14248577 - A lone meteor from the 2023 Geminid meteor shower streaks away from the radiant point in Gemini below centre amid the red aurora, with the meteor in Auriga and above Orion rising at lower right. An aurora brightens the northern sky at left, with a broad green lower curtain and red upper curtain.
13899768 - A composite of the Quadrantid meteor shower, on January 3, 2016, in a sequence of images shot over 2 hours from 9 to 11 pm MST from southern Alberta. This is a stack of 14 images, the best out of 600 shot that recorded meteors. The ground and sky comes from one image with the best Quad of the night, and the other images were masked and layered into that image, with no attempt to align their paths with the moving radiant point. However, over the 2 hours, the radiant point low in the north would not have moved too much, as it rose higher into the northern sky.
13898763 - Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) reflected in the still waters this night of Crawling Lake in southern Alberta. A dim aurora at right colours the sky magenta. Lingering twilight colours the sky blue. A meteor or more likely a flaring satellite appears at right and is also reflected in the water. Even in this short exposure, the two tails — dust and ion — are visible. This was July 20, 2020.
13898975 - The stars of the Big Dipper at left and the W of Cassiopeia at right over a silhouette of trees in the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Saskatchewan. Polaris and the Little Dipper are at centre. This serves to illustrate the location of these northern stars in late summer and autumn. The Andromeda Galaxy is at upper right, with a short meteor trail below it.
13999274 - Two lone Lyrid meteors on the peak of the meteor shower night,April 22,2023. Two captured out of 342 frames taken over 2 hours. The sky and ground come from the exposure with the bright meteor on it,when a dim aurora was also on the northeast horizon. The bright meteor shows the classic green to pink gradient of colours. Vega and Lyra are rising at lower centre. Deneb and Cygnus are at left. Arcturus is at upper right.
13898092 - A 360° fish-eye panorama of the evening sky, January 16, 2015, showing the Zodiacal Light rising out of the western sky and last vestiges of twilight, and the Milky Way across the sky in the east. Comet Lovejoy (C/2-14 Q2) near the Pleiades just left of centre at the top of the pyramid of light from the Zodiacal Light. A meteor appears below centre. This is a stitch of 8 segments, each taken with the 15mm lens and Canon 6D in portrait orientation, for 1 minute at ISO 3200 and f/2.8. Stitched with PTGui.
13897964 - The 2016 Perseid meteor shower, in a view looking north to the Big Dipper and with the radiant point in Perseus at upper right, the point where the meteors appear to be streaking from. I shot this on the peak night of the shower, August 11/12 after moonset so the sky was dark and in fact filled with bright airglow, appearing here as bands of green and yellow, mixed with a low-level aurora to the north as well. While it looks like the sky has artificial light pollution, the glows here are natural, from aurora and airglow.
13898623 - A composite of the Perseid meteor shower, on the peak night, Aug 11/12, 2016, looking northeast to the radiant point in Perseus left of centre, with the Pleiades and Hyades clusters in Taurus rising. There are 33 meteors here. Note the fairly consistent green to red tint of each meteor streak. A couple of streaks look more white and might be flaring satellites though their trajectory matches where a Perseid should be.

13899753 - One of the 27 antennas of the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope complex in New Mexico (with others in the distance at lower right) illuminated by moonlight, on December 13, 2013, peak night for the Geminid meteor shower. A single exposure of 30 seconds with the Rokinon 14mm lens at f/2.8 and Canon 5D MkII at ISO 800. Orion is rising a lower centre. The Moon is the bright object at upper right. The Pleiades and Hyades are above centre.

13999527 - This is a panorama of the ground and sky framing the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,in the Red Deer River valley in Alberta, with the summer sky above filled with three dozen meteors from the annual Perseid meteor shower,of August 12,2023. The meteors all appear to be streaking away from the radiant point in Perseus at far left. The location is the upper viewpoint near the Park Entrance, and looking northeast to southeast. The lights in the valley below are from the campground and service centre. The one glaring sodium vapour light should be removed or at least shielded. The brightest hori
13999319 - This is the Perseid meteor shower over the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,in the Red Deer River valley in Alberta, with the summer sky above filled with about two dozen meteors from the annual shower on August 12,2023. The meteors all appear to be streaking away from the radiant point in Perseus at left, below the "W" of Cassiopeia. The meteor trails are shortest near the radiant point,as at that location they are coming at us head on. The Andromeda Galaxy is near centre.

14248609 - This is a selfie portrait of me under the Milky Way from my backyard in rural Alberta, on a spring night, May 9/10, 2024. The summer Milky Way and the constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpius (with yellow Antares) lie due south here, but low in the sky at my latitude of 51° N. This shows the Dark Horse well, made of dark dust lanes in the Milky Way. The galactic centre is just above the trees at centre. A meteor is at left below Altair.
71370067 - Meteor Red Daisies in full bloom, Genoa, Liguria, Italy, Europe
14249220 - This is a demonstration of the crowded sky we now have, with all the trails being from Earth-orbiting satellites, with the exception of the tapered orange streak at lower right which is likely a meteor. This is a stack of 40 exposures taken over 70 minutes, layered to accumulate the satellite trails, not eliminate them, to show how many satellites crossed the field in the hour plus of the imaging. Are some SpaceX Starlinks? Perhaps, but there are many other satellites up there now.
