The galactic core area of the Milky Way over Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta with the pairing of giant planets from summer 2020. Jupiter is the bright object at centre, with Saturn dimmer to the left (east) of Jupiter. In 2020 the two planets were close together in the summer sky. Sagittarius is at right. The Prince of Wales Hotel is the bright light source. This was July 13-14, 2020.

An image of the entire sky and summer Milky Way, from home in southern Alberta, from my backyard, on September 12, 2015. The night was clear but not that transparent, as some humidity and haze added more than usual horizon glows reflecting yellow light pollution. But there was no aurora, in a week filled with auroras every night. The prominent red nebula overhead is the North America Nebula in Cygnus. South is at bottom, west to the right.

Scorpius and Sagittarius rising, with Scorpius coming up on its side, as seen from New South Wales, Australia, April 2, 2016. Mars is the brightest object left of Antares in Scorpius, with fainter Saturn below the reddish pairing of Mars and its rival Antares. The cyan-colored blob at lower left above the trees is Comet Linear/252P, which passed close to Earth the previous month. Many nebulas and clusters are visible along the Milky Way around the Galactic Centre in Sagittarius, which is rising here.

The galactic centre region of the Milky Way in Sagittarius and Scorpius, over the upper field of the Texas Star Party, near Fort Davis, Texas, May 13, 2015. About 600 people gather here each spring for a star party under very dark skies near the MacDonald Observatory. Sagittarius is left of centre and Scorpius is right of centre with the planet Saturn the bright object at the top edge right of centre. The dark lanes of the Dark Horse and Pipe Nebula areas lead from the Milky Way to the stars of Scorpius, including Antares. The semi-circular Corona Australis is just clearing the hilltop at left

The panorama extends from Canis Major low on the horizon to Perseus at top near the zenith. Orion is at right of centre, with Gemini to the left and Taurus and Auriga above Orion. Mars is the bright reddish object in Taurus aboce similarly coloured but dimmer Aldebaran, itself amid the Hyades star cluster. The blue Pleiades is at upper right. Sirius is the bright star at bottom. The image takes in the complete Winter Hexagon (aka the Winter Circle) of bright stars.

This is a framing of the Cygnus Starcloud in the northern Milky Way,with the patches of red hydrogen gas throughout the region emphasized. The field takes in the "neck" of Cygnus, from north of Eta Cygni at left,to just south of Beta Cygni, aka Albireo,at right, with the field oriented along the Milky Way. Some of the nebulosity here is numbered in the Sharpless catalogue. For example, the faint arc left of Albireo is Sharpless 2-91. The brightest patch of nebulosity lower left of Eta Cygni is Sh2-101. The nebula in the botttom right corner is NGC 6820 in Vulpecula. The globular cluster M56 in Lyr

The small constellation of Sagitta the Arrow, in the Milky Way. The small globular cluster, Messier 71, is between Gamma Sagittae and Delta Sagittae. Below M71 is the very sparse star cluster Harvard 20. The emission nebula Sharpless 2-84 is supposedly at centre but does not show up here except perhaps as a dim blue area of reflection nebulosity, though there is some faint red emission nebulosity at lower right.

The summer Milky Way to the southwest over Victoria Glacier and Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta on a moonless night, August 29, 2016. This was about midnight at the start of the night, and before a time-lapse sequence. A low-level aurora and likely airglow this night to the north added a general green cast to the sky, minimized to some extent here.

All of Scorpius, plus parts of Lupus and Ara regions of the southern Milky Way. This area was directly overhead when I took this at about 4:30 am local time on April 6, 2014 from near Coonabarabran, Australia. The head of Scorpius is at top his tail at bottom though you could turn this image any direction and it would be correct as seen in the sky at this latitude, depending on the time of night. But in portrait mode like this north is at top. Along the Milky Way are numerous nebulas, including the False Comet area, the Cat's Paw area, and the colourful nebulas around Antares at top. The dark

A portrait of Orion and the northern winter Milky Way, on a February night, 2020. The Orion Nebula is the bright, overexposed pink glow below the Belt of Orion, while the curving arc of red is Barnard’s Loop, now thought to be a supernova remnant. The bright red glow at upper left is the Rosette Nebula. Red Betelgeuse was at its minimum then, at about the same brightness as Bellatrix to the right — Betelgeuse is usually about as bright as blue-white Rigel at lower right. However, Betelguese began to re-brighten in the nights after this.

This frames the southern Milky Way from Canis Major and its bright star Sirius at top, to Carina and its bright star Canopus at bottom. Sirius and Canopus are the first and second brightest stars in the night sky, respectively. The major feature here is the massive Gum Nebula, perhaps a remnant from a nearby (1500 light years away) but ancient supernova. Or it might be a more normal emission nebula created as part of star formation and stellar winds. Its 36º-wide extent sprawls across Puppis (just below Canis Major) and Vela (to the left of Canopus). It was discovered by Australian astronomer
