The Teatro Massimo in Palermo,3200 seats,is Italy's largest and Europe's third largest opera house. It was built in the style of historicism at Piazza Verdi. The architect was Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile,who started in 1875 with the construction. At his death,the building was completed in 1897 by his son Ernesto Basile. The Opera closed in 1974 due to renovation. The Teatro Massimo was closed for more than 20 years,because of corrupt,mafia-building policy. In 1997 it was reopened with Verdi's opera Nabucco,Palermo,Sicily,Italy,Europe.
