Die Schwarze Stockrose hat in der Volksheilkunde eine sehr lange Tradition. Sie wurden schon in Klostergärten angebaut. Speziell die Schwarze Stockrose wird auch Apothekermalve genannt, weil sie die Heilkräftigste unter den Stockrosen sein soll. Stockrosenblätter wurde früher in Apotheken geführt. In der Volksheilkunde waren Waschungen mit einer Abkochung von schwarzen Stockrosenblüten, in Wein gegen Hautausschläge gebräuchlich.
