Man has always been fascinated by extremes. Nature is an excellent source of this phenomenon. Certain places on earth are exposed to extreme temperatures due to their locations.
The highlands of Oymyakon in north-eastern Siberia are considered the coldest inhabited region on earth. According to the inhabitants, in the winter of 1924, a thermometer read minus 71.2 degrees Celsius. In February 1933, Oymyakon reported a record-breaking freezing temperature of minus 67.8 degrees Celsius. Children are sent off to school when the temperature reaches minus 50 degrees Celsius.
The hottest temperature ever recorded on earth was in California in the year of 1913. Near Furnace Creek, in Death Valley, the temperature rose to 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius).
